Minutes

Present:    Phil Fredette, Chairperson; Jeff Ofstie, Vice-Chairperson; Raymond Bailey; Nancy Kirk; Robert Volk; Todd Lumbard; Agnes Ewen; Eleanor Shumay; Shannon Leson; Larry Wilson, Superintendent of Funeral and Cremation Services; Sandy Mahon, Registrar

Council was advised 8 complaints have been received since the last Council meeting.  Seven complaints have been resolved and 1 complaint has been referred to an Investigation Committee.

Sixty seven compliance reviews have been conducted to date and 6 trust-by-trust prepaid compliance reviews have been conducted to date.

A motion was passed to authorize the appointment to an Investigation Committee of Don Sheppard, Chairperson; Kevin Martens, Licensee and Art Hunter, Consumer to consider complaint 2013-09.

A motion was passed to authorize the appointment to an Investigation Committee of Earl Mosewich, Chairperson; Gerry Mitchell, Licensee and Armand Greyeyes, Consumer to consider complaint 2013-15.

Shannon Leson will accompany the Registrar to The International Conference of Funeral Service Examining Boards Annual Conference from February 26 to 27, 2014.

Council was advised the Registrar now has access to death and cremation rates in Saskatchewan.  In 2012 there were 9278 deaths of which 5335 (58%) resulted in cremation.

The Superintendent shared a preliminary report of the Saskatchewan Cemetery review.

A motion was passed to approve revisions to the following bylaws:

A motion was passed to refer bylaw 2014(2)(b) to the Education and Professional Development Committee for review.

A motion was passed to approve proposed changes to the Policy and Procedures of Council and a further motion was passed to approve the proposed changes to Council Governance.

A motion was passed to approve the July 2013 Revenue & Expense Report.

Council was advised of the changes that have been made to the front page of the Council website.

The final report on the evaluation of the SIAST Funeral Service Education Program was shared with Council.  The report is referred to the Education and Professional Development Committee to review and discuss with relevant stakeholders.

A motion was passed to engage the services of Resonance, LLP to facilitate a strategic planning session of Council in 2014.

Council passed a motion to reimburse an owner a late fee penalty of $105 due to the extenuating circumstances that were identified.

A motion was passed to appoint the following licensees as Mentors: 

  • Christopher Mohr
  • Kelsi Palmer
  • Corrine Palka
  • Myron Fletcher

The next meeting of Council will be held on October 10, 2013.
